My name is Karen Valle Timbers, and I am a Bachelor of Science graduate in Architectural Engineering from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico, Bayamón Campus. During approximately six months of internship at ECR Engineering, I had the opportunity to collaborate on industrial building improvement projects—an experience that marked a turning point in my academic and professional development.
Throughout this internship, I participated in various tasks and responsibilities, including technical inspections, report writing, cost estimate support, activity coordination, and documentation verification. These experiences helped me sharpen my ability to identify damage or affected areas during inspections, while also expanding my technical knowledge, understanding of permitting and bidding processes, and coordination skills in real-world projects.
The internship served as a bridge between theory and practice, as I was able to directly apply many of the concepts learned in my university courses to the assigned tasks. This experience not only reinforced my academic training but also gave me a clearer vision of the areas I want to specialize in professionally.
Challenges were certainly present, especially when facing new tasks. However, thanks to the guidance and support of the professional team at ECR Engineering, each challenge became an opportunity for growth. The company welcomed me at a time when I had little experience, which demonstrates its commitment to the development of young engineers.
From ECR Engineering, I take away valuable lessons: the importance of teamwork, the significance of technical precision in every detail, and the understanding that engineering has a direct impact on the safety and functionality of the structures that serve our communities. Additionally, I learned that working in an environment surrounded by passionate experts not only enhances knowledge but also boosts personal motivation to give your best.
I recommend this experience to any student who wants to grow, learn, and face the challenge of applying their knowledge in real-life situations. For me, this internship was confirmation that I am on the right path, and I will always remember:
“Every challenge overcome is one more step toward becoming the engineer I dream of being.”
